Conjugation of Regular "-ir" Verbs in the
Simple Present Indicative

Explanation

As mentioned in a previous lesson, In Spanish there are only three infinitive endings: -ar (comprar = to buy), -er (comer = to eat), -ir (vivir = to live). They will generally have to be conjugated when using them in a sentence. If you do not conjugate a verb correctly, your Spanish will look and sound awkward.
In this lesson you will learn how to conjugated regular -ir verbs in the simple present tense. To conjugate a regular -ir verb in the simple present tense, drop the ending (-ir) and add the appropriate endings.

Conjugation of Regular "-ir" Verbs
The verb "vivir (to live)"

Yo                              vivo
Tú                              vives
Él, Ella, Usted             vive
Nosotros                   vivimos
Vosotros                   vivís
Ustedes, Ellos, Ellas     viven
I                                              live
You (inf., sing.)                          live
He, she, You (for., sing.)          lives/live
We                                          live
You-all (Spain)                           live
You (all), They  (m.), They (f.)     live
Notice that the endings for -ir verbs are very similar to -er verbs, except for the nosotros an vosotros form. The good news is that once you are familiar with this pattern you will be able to conjugate hundreds of regular -ir verbs.

Remember

A conjugated verb ending tells us who does the action. For example if I say vivimos, it means we live. It is not necessary to include the personal pronoun nosotros (we) since we know the ending imos belongs to nosotros (we). That's why in Spanish personal pronouns can be generally omitted, and verb conjugation is a big deal!
